Ukhimath

Ukhimath is situated in Rudraprayag District of Uttrakhand State at an elevation of 1,318 mts above the sea level. Ukhimath is also pronounced as Okhimath sometimes. Ukhimath is the home for Lord Kedarnath and Lord of Madhyamaheshwar during winter season. They are worshipped at Omkareshwar Temple when the Kedarnath remains closed. It is mainly inhabited by the Rawal’s who are the head priests(pundits) of Kedarnath Temple. The snow clad peaks of Himalayas are clearly visible from here.

Ukhimath History and Legend

According to some stories Ukhimath got its name from the daughter of Banasur whom name was Usha. Many temples are present till date dedicated to Usha, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Mandhata and Aniruddha.

Ukhimath is accessible round the year. Carry light woolens in summers and heavy in winters. It is situated on the road connecting Guptkashi with Gopeshwar.It can be used as center destination for visiting different places located nearby, i.e. Madhmaheshwar (Second kedar), Tungnath ji (Third kedar) and Deoria Tal(natural fresh water lake) and many other picturesque places.Wedding of Usha (Daughter of Vanasur) and Anirudh (Grandson of Lord Krishna) was solemnized here. Ukhimath is well connected to other major cities of the country via regular buses.There are no regular trains from other major cities. Nearest train station is Rishikesh.You can a get flight to Dehradun Airport on regular basis.
